HUNTER X HUNTER #6 - - Watch & Learn

Would you believe it? Sam was actually on to something when he
suggested I also liken HUNTER X HUNTER’s “working with the bare basics” approach
to IRON CHEF
. Sure enough, the Hunters' latest challenge is to please examiners by serving two simple, ingredients in
the most creative ways their culinary skills could muster.

We’ve gone from an episode centered on orange soda to an episode focused
on ham and eggs. I’m starting to think that Togashi kept putting off meals
while he was putting himself through this series’ arduous production gauntlet.

Again, it’s hard not to view this show from a bit of an amused and
slightly-ironic distance. Not only am I chuckling about how Togashi seems to be
challenging himself to craft a shonen out of a limited number of ingredients, I
also can’t help but smirk about how the show introduces the first bit of
darkness to ironically underscore its generally cheery mood.

I’m talking, of course, about the scene where numerous would-be hunters
drop to their deaths like a bunch of blockheaded lemmings. There’s some right
combination of tragic stupidity, and a quick, matter-of-fact moving on from
that tragedy, that is just so amusing. It’s almost like the Backyardigans took a short break from a song-and-dance routine to read an excerpt from the Darwin
Awards, then quickly carried on with the show like nothing happened.

One a more serious note, I did appreciate the little bit of dialog
where the elder examiner gently rebukes our cute, pixie-like examiner about
being unreasonably critical in her evaluations. These adventures
are often so stuffed with sage mentors who seem to have always known the
answers, it’s actually refreshing for a show to acknowledge that being a good
teacher actually requires as much of a learning curve as being a good pupil.
